Empowering Young Latinx Immigrants Through Digital Storytelling

0

A recent study by Fordham GSS Assistant Professor Jenn Lilly, Ph.D., explores how digital storytelling can support young Latinx immigrants (ages 18-24).

This research investigated the impact of a program combining Participatory Video (PV) and narrative therapy practices. PV allows participants to create their own videos, fostering self-expression and exploration of their experiences. Narrative therapy empowers individuals to reclaim their narratives and rewrite stories that challenges may have shaped.

The article, “‘Putting My Life into a Story’: A Preliminary Evaluation of a Digital Narrative Intervention Combining Participatory Video and Narrative Therapy,” was published in the Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology.

Lilly’s study, based on interviews, focus groups, and program observations, revealed three key themes:

  • Critical Reframing: Participants challenged negative stereotypes and societal injustices they faced.
  • Latinx and Immigrant Pride: Young people developed a stronger sense of identity and belonging.
  • Media Literacy: Participants gained valuable skills in crafting and sharing their stories through video.

Lilly’s study suggests that the combination of PV and narrative therapy can be a potent tool for social workers supporting young Latinx immigrants. This innovative approach empowers them to find their voices, navigate challenges, and build a stronger sense of self and community, fostering encouragement and motivation.
