Conducting international social work research is imperative to our profession’s understanding of different global perspectives and how those views can enhance our work.
Fordham GSS Associate Dean and Professor Elaine Congress, Ph.D., has worked with the United Nations throughout her career to explore this sect of social work and provide in-depth research to deepen our professional understanding. She has even collaborated with the UN to create field internships for Fordham GSS MSW students interested in international and policy social work careers.

Congress presenting at the Cheiron Meeting
Recently, this research was displayed through a series of books titled Behavioral Science in the Global Arena. Each book dealt with a significant issue in international social work: the three volumes being titled, Addressing Timely Issues at the United Nations and Beyond; Global Mental, Spiritual, and Emotional Health; and Global Health Trends & Issues. Additionally, each volume featured a number of respected academics, including faculty members, students, and alumni from Fordham GSS.
From June 15 – 18, Congress presented on the book series at the 55th Annual Meeting of Cheiron, organized by the International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The title of her talk was “Behavioral Science at the United Nations.” The conference was held at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus.
Congress’s work is a terrific example of social work’s global reach and what can get accomplished when social workers open their minds to global perspectives. This mindset is crucial to the progression of the profession and society. Congratulations, Dr. Congress!
