Club Amigas Valentine’s Day Party

0
On February 10, both middle school and high school mentees came to the Fordham Rose Hill Campus for a Valentine’s Day party. Pizza and soda was enjoyed by all the mentees and mentors, and everyone had a great time making valentine cards for friends and family.

Club Amigas/Mentoring Latinas is an innovative mentoring program that brings together Fordham Latina college students with middle and high school Latinas in the Bronx. The mentors meet weekly with their mentees on the Fordham campus where they learn about college, get homework help, hang out in the campus lounges and computer labs, and most importantly chat and connect. Throughout the year we have field trips, presentations, parties, parent workshops, and other group activities.

The Fordham college Latina students have been meeting with their mentees all fall to build friendships, and help them learn how to handle the many challenges they face as they navigate middle school and high school. The mentors are their friends, someone they can confide in and look up to. Many of the mentees who never dreamed of going to college, are now thinking about how they can finish high school and become college students!

The mentors are role models for the younger girls. They inspire them to feel proud of their cultural identity and build a bright future for themselves.

Club Amigas has been a program of the GSS Institute for Women and Girls for the past 10 years, and it’s going strong!
