This is a series where we ask Fordham GSS Master of Social Work students to tell us why they chose to pursue the social work profession, and why they picked Fordham for their educational experience. Sahiba Bhatnagar is a part-time, advanced standing MSW student at the Lincoln Center campus. If you’d like to speak with a student ambassador about the Fordham MSW experience, contact them here. Watch the video version of Sahiba’s interview here.
Why do you want to be a social worker?
When I was in my undergrad, I was bouncing from major to major, completely unsure of what I wanted to do. And it wasn’t until I stepped foot in my Intro to Social Work class, that I knew I finally found somewhere that I belonged.
I worked in a hospital because I thought I wanted to be a nurse, and I worked in a school because I wanted to be a teacher, and then I found a way to be a social worker in both of those settings—so I absolutely love social work because it’s such a broad field that you know that you can find a place in.
Why did you choose Fordham?
I chose Fordham because of the amazing balance between the strong academic background of it and also the supportive community that the staff and students brought with it, and also just the fact of being in New York City. I’ve always loved the city. I’m from Long Island, so being in the city, I knew I could get experience outside of the classroom that would be amazing.
