Fordham GSS is proud to announce that M.S.W. student Eileen Castillo, GSS ’25, has been named a 2024-2025 Latino Social Work Coalition CORE SCHOLARS Scholarship recipient.

The scholarship program “caters specifically to 2nd or 3rd year MSW bilingual and Latino/x/e Students facing significant financial constraints in the vibrant landscape of New York City,” according to the organization’s website. Along with the scholarship stipend, participants receive monthly mentorship sessions with professionals in the field, networking opportunities, and ongoing access to the organization’s professional development events.

“Eileen demonstrates an impressive commitment to eliminating interpersonal violence,” said Associate Dean Elaine Congress, D.S.W., who nominated Castillo for the scholarship. “Her advocacy activities on behalf of vulnerable Latina women is outstanding, and I predict she will be very successful as a Fordham M.S.W. student.”

We asked Castillo what receiving this scholarship means to her, and why Latino representation is so important to social work as a field.

What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?

Receiving this scholarship is a great honor and a validation of my commitment to pursuing a career in social work. It not only alleviates some of the financial burdens associated with graduate school but also motivates me to continue striving for excellence. This support is a reminder that my efforts and aspirations are valued.

Why do you want to become a social worker?

I want to become a social worker to provide support and guidance to youth and adolescents, particularly in educational or healthcare settings. Coming from a traditional Dominican household, I experienced firsthand the challenges that come with navigating these systems. My goal is to help young people overcome these challenges and empower them to achieve their full potential.

Why is Latino representation in social work so important?

Latin representation in social work is crucial because it ensures that the unique needs and experiences of our communities are understood and addressed. Having social workers who share similar cultural backgrounds can build trust and facilitate more effective interventions. It also helps to challenge stereotypes and advocate for culturally relevant practices. For me, as a proud Dominican-American, it is important to contribute to a field that reflects and respects the diversity of the populations we serve.
