Social Workers’ Support for Veterans

0

Harvey Cruz, GSS ’24, is a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) student at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. He also serves as a student ambassador for the program. Watch the video of this interview here.

Why do you want to be a social worker?

I want to be a social worker because I love my community essentially. Being in the Bronx, I’ve just seen so many things where I was like, I wonder why this is like that. Why can’t this be better? I just want to show up for my community and be there.

Why did you choose Fordham for your MSW?

I chose Fordham honestly because [from the]first line of communication, I felt extremely welcomed by everyone. I applied to other schools, but with this school specifically, I didn’t feel like another applicant. I felt like I mattered and that honestly made my decision super easy, like, I want to come to this school. I want to be a part of this community.

Why did you want to be a student ambassador?

I felt that sense of welcoming and I wanted to do that for other students coming in. I wanted to be able to answer these questions as truthfully and honestly as possible and share my experience. I’m a veteran and I felt that bringing that presence might encourage people that might be in similar situations as me and I could be a network of support for them.
