Fordham GSS Summer 2024 London Cohort: Update From Across the Pond

0

The Fordham GSS Summer 2024 London Program Cohort is officially underway, and our Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) students have made it safely across the pond!

In Fordham GSS’s Summer London Program, you can take up to two classes and earn six credits toward your degree. The three-week program begins in NYC with three days of classes and finishes with two weeks at Fordham’s London Centre in Clerkenwell, London.

In addition to coursework, students have the opportunity to visit historic settlement houses that continue to be mainstays of their communities—both at home in NYC, and in London. Students meet staff and take tours around University Settlement and Henry Street Settlement House in New York, and Oxford House, Toynbee Hall, and Coin Street Community Builders in London.

Our eyes and ears on the ground this year is M.S.W. student ambassador Supriya Chabria, GSS ’25. Supriya has given us some of the best highlights from the trip so far:

Arriving in London

Our school mascot Ramses poses for a photo in the lobby of the Fordham London Center. This is where students complete coursework while abroad, but the building is so much more than just classrooms. Equipped with a spacious and modern lounge area, conference rooms for meetings, and a roof terrace, the Fordham London Center is the perfect gathering spot in London’s Center to study for class, socialize, and make plans for going out on the town!

Drinks at the Rabbit Hole

Our M.S.W. students have ample time outside of class to explore London and all it has to offer! The city may not have quite the array of culture, music, and food that NYC enjoys (but we’re certainly biased!), but there is no shortage of opportunity to have some fun in between study time. The Rabbit Hole is an establishment right down the street from the London Center, but students also take the train on weekends to explore other cities like Paris, which is only about a two hour trainride away.

Study Time!

It’s not all fun and games in London, just mostly. Our students have the option to take one or both of the following courses overseas:

  • SWGS 6705: Comparative Social Welfare Policy and Advocacy
  • SWGS 6429: Methods of Group Intervention

Courses are taught in a condensed format over the three week period of the program (one week in NYC, two in London) by members of our GSS full-time faculty. Each class students complete will count as three credits toward their M.S.W. degree. That’s the potential to earn six credits in less than a month—with plenty of time for fish n’ chips.

The Fun Continues!

Our students still have some time before they return to Manhattan, so be on the lookout for more updates from Supriya about the trip!
