How to Write a Personal Statement for Graduate School

0
We can’t say this enough: Your personal statement is a crucial component of your Fordham Master of Social Work (MSW) application!
Not only does the personal statement showcase your writing abilities, it’s a window into who you are and why you want to do this work. That’s a powerful thing, but it can come with A LOT of pressure. We understand.
But you’re not alone. Thousands of students have been in your shoes. By being true to themselves and their stories, they genuinely and effectively communicated their “why.” You can do it, too!
We asked a few of our current students for some personal statement drafting tips. Remember, these are guidelines—your personal statement is about YOUR social work journey. But having some best practices in mind when writing is a great way to frame your narrative.
A big thank you to all of the students who took some time out to speak with us and pay it forward. Future social workers thank you.

Maurice’s Tips!

“Who you are and your desire to be of service is a result of a lifetime of experiences. Pull from those experiences that inspired you to take this journey. Put the faces of those you wish to help in your mind when you write.

Ask yourself the magic question, ‘If I could wake up tomorrow and everything was perfect, what would that look like?’, and express how you would want to bring that to fruition.”

Taniesha’s Tips!

“When writing your personal statement, always be authentic and transparent.

Focus on your ‘Why’—why are you pursuing this field? Don’t be afraid to share a personal lived experience that connects you to your passion and purpose.”
