We’ve seen the cycles of optimism and disillusionment around Generative AI become a whirlwind in Silicon Valley, but what about nonprofits?
New research from Fordham GSS Professor Lauri Goldkind, Ph.D., explores how organizations in the nonprofit space can balance the productivity benefits GenAI brings to daily workloads, with the significant concerns around privacy issues, misinformation, and bias that can plague it. Her article, titled “AI in the Nonprofit Human Services: Distinguishing Between Hype, Harm, and Hope,” and published in Human Service Organizations: Management, Leadership & Governance, offers a framework to utilize this new technology effectively while protecting against its harms.
“By understanding GenAI’s capabilities and limitations, leaders can craft policies that align with nonprofit values, ensure ethical deployment, and protect marginalized populations,” the article reads. “Encouraging staff experimentation, developing AI literacy, and fostering collaboration are essential steps to integrate AI responsibly.”
