Imago Therapy: The Evolving Understanding of Relationships

0

As a social worker, I find it difficult sometimes to express my thoughts to my clients when they are struggling with communication.  They often find themselves in confrontations, rather than pleasant conversation, with their spouses, loved ones, peers and others. I’m always searching for new techniques, theories and models to assist in those moments.

On my second day as the new Administrator for Continuing Education at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service(GSS),   I had the pleasure of meeting Carol Kramer-Slepian and Stephen Slepian (pictured), who are currently working in the field doing Imago Therapy. You’re probably wondering, “What is Imago Therapy?” Like you, I was also curious to know. During my interview, they explained that Imago is a therapy that is utilized to strengthen relationships, intimate relationships. It evolved from two amazing books titled “Getting the Love you Want” and “Keeping the Love You Find.”

I’ll be honest, I was intrigued. Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging and  self-actualization at the end of a long relationship, not to mention growth. As I sat there listening, I watched these two therapists engage in role play. I was sold on the concepts that Imago had to offer. This interview came at a perfect time in my career, as I look to strengthen areas of my work focused on improving communication with my clients, and preventing assumptions in my daily and professional life.
