Nicole currently works for NYC’s Department of Education as a school social worker on the school-based support team. In this role, she helps students get connected to special education services.
Nicole works in Brownsville, Brooklyn which she said is one of NYC’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. She provides at-risk counseling to students and utilized art and play therapy interventions, and works with the community to bring workshops to our students and families, i.e., child abuse prevention, positive parenting, internet safety.
Nicole is also a member of her school’s crisis team, where she provides crisis intervention along with providing support to teachers/staff about how to address behavioral concerns.
“During my time at GSS, my professors stressed the importance of cultural competence along with social justice,” Nicole said. “I chose GSS because they provided a well-rounded social work education which included not only clinical skills but macro skills like advocacy and social policy as well. My advanced year field placement was at a high school in Harlem which confirmed my love for school social work!”
Thanks so much for all of your great work and for keeping in touch, Nicole! #ForeverARam
