Why Social Work? Why Fordham? With Mitchell Selzer, GSS ’25

0

This is a series where we ask Fordham GSS Master of Social Work students to tell us why they chose to pursue the social work profession, and why they picked Fordham for their educational experience. Mitchell Selzer is a full-time advanced standing MSW student in the Molloy Hybrid campus option. If you’d like to speak with a student ambassador about the Fordham MSW experience, contact them here.

Why do you want to be a social worker?

I think the reason why I wanted to pursue the field of social work is because of my upbringing and [the]hardships that I had to endure growing up. I was able to overcome those challenges, and I want to give back to the field of social work by using those challenges today as assets in my life, and help others.

Why did you choose Fordham?

There are a couple of different factors as to why I ended up choosing Fordham.

First, I had a social work friend and mentor [who]suggested Fordham. She knew I was a full-time worker, and she said that Fordham has a flexible schedule for their students. When I went on the initial interview, they told me about the Molloy [University] campus [hybrid MSW option], and being a Queens resident, it’s about a 30-minute drive from my house. I was able to fit that schedule of night courses into my schedule and it was convenient.

I’m happy that I went with Fordham because of the faculty and staff and everyone’s helpful, and it’s been a great experience so far.
