2016 marks the centennial anniversary of Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. Fordham University inaugurated the School of Sociology and Social Service on November 6, 1916. We will celebrate this milestone anniversary all year long and wanted to involve our MSW students. In our search for a student to join the team, I knew we needed to find a student who has a very special place in their heart for Fordham. I can easily say this is true for Johanna Tappen.
During orientation of her Foundation year, her first niece was born. This is especially amazing because her brother is also a social worker and was her greatest inspiration to obtain her MSW. Johanna remembers sharing the news with fellow students who were thrilled for her. It was at this moment she knew her time at Fordham GSS would be memorable.
Johanna is originally from Poughkeepsie, NY and just moved to NYC this year to be able to fully appreciate being a student at Fordham and everything the big apple has to offer. Johanna is currently in her advanced year in the MSW program and is a social work intern at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. With an interest in Palliative Care, it may seem a bit odd that she joins the GSS family as a Graduate Assistant to help coordinate Continuing Education and centennial events. However, her varied experience with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps working in non-profit agencies in North Carolina and Texas makes her a valuable asset to the team. She has already hit the ground running working on Continuing Education events and ideas for our Centennial Celebration. Most importantly, her attention to detail, love for yoga and meditation will help keep us centered.
Please help us welcome Johanna and visit our website to see how you can join us for our centennial celebration! If you have any ideas about how you would like to celebrate with us please contact her at jtappen2@fordham.edu.
